Opus AI (OpusClip): what it is, what it costs, and whether it is free
Checked October 2026 Prices and plans read on opus.pro and its pricing page; vendors change them without notice.
Opus AI is OpusClip: the AI video clipping tool at opus.pro, made by OpusClip Inc., that turns long videos into short vertical clips. It is free to start, with a free plan of 60 credits (minutes of source video) a month and watermarked exports, plus a 7-day Pro trial.
Paid plans start at $15/month (Starter), billed in credits per minute of source video rather than per clip. The same company also makes Agent Opus, a separate AI video agent, and paid credits work in both.
OpenShorts does the same core job (moment detection, 9:16 reframing, word-level subtitles) and differs on two axes that matter: it is MIT-licensed and self-hostable, and it prices in flat minutes rather than per-minute credits.
Your first video free up to 60 minutes, then 20 free minutes a month, no credit card. Or self-host it free under MIT.
Is Opus AI the same thing as Opus Clip?
Yes, in almost every search. The clipping product is OpusClip, the company is
OpusClip Inc., and the site is opus.pro; "Opus AI", "Opus Clip AI"
and "Opus Clips" are the other names people type for the same clipper. The same company runs a second product under the Opus name,
Agent Opus (agent.opus.pro), an AI video agent with its own
Free, Pro and Max plans. Paid credits work in both, so if you pay for one you can
spend in the other.
"Opus" is also the name of an Anthropic language model. That is a different thing entirely and has nothing to do with video clipping. This page is about the video tools at opus.pro.
What OpusClip does
It takes a long video, finds the segments worth keeping, cuts them, reframes them and burns in animated captions. The features its users cite:
- ClipAnything, which picks moments from visual, audio and sentiment cues, so it works on footage with little dialogue, and takes a prompt for what to look for.
- ReframeAnything (alpha), which tracks a subject and reframes to 9:16, 1:1 or 16:9.
- A virality score from 0 to 99 built from hook, flow, value and trend, shown on paid plans only.
- Animated captions in 20+ languages, AI B-roll, dubbing, a scheduler, and an API on Pro and Business.
It is cloud only: there is no self-hosted edition and no source to read. It accepts sources up to 10 hours long.
How the workflow compares
Opus AI (OpusClip)
- Upload a file or paste a YouTube link
- ClipAnything proposes clips with a virality score
- Choose the clips worth keeping
- Adjust captions, B-roll and framing
- Export, or schedule to connected accounts
OpenShorts
- Paste a YouTube link or upload
- Word-level transcript and scene cuts
- Gemini scores and picks 3 to 15 moments
- Reframed: face tracking, two speakers, screen + presenter
- Captions and hook burned in, posted or sent by webhook
Is Opus AI free?
Yes, to a point. The free plan gives 60 credits a month, one per minute of source video, with 1080p exports that carry a watermark, no editing and a 3-day window to export. There is also a 7-day Pro trial with no credit card, still watermarked. Removing the watermark starts at Starter, $15/month.
What Opus AI costs
In one line: Free, Starter at $15/month, Pro at $29/month or $14.50/month billed yearly, and a custom-priced Business plan, all billed in credits per minute of source video imported. Every plan, the trial, how a credit is rounded and what the Pro plan adds are on the Opus Clip pricing page.
Where OpenShorts differs
- OpenShorts is MIT-licensed and can be self-hosted with Docker, so the source video never leaves your machine. Opus is cloud only.
- OpenShorts self-hosted has no meter of any kind. Opus bills credits per minute of source imported, and monthly credits expire after 60 days.
- OpenShorts Cloud starts at $12/month for 100 minutes with no watermark; the hosted free plan clips your first video free up to 60 minutes, then 20 minutes a month.
- Opus has the larger caption-style library and a longer track record. If your clips live or die on animated caption design, that advantage is real.
What the open source alternative produces
Real OpenShorts output, not a mock-up. A two-person podcast: both speakers stacked in half-frames, captions on the seam where they cover nobody. Source: Turn the Tables with Dan and Shoshana Jordan, Heritage of Faith, CC BY.
What does OpenShorts cost?
If you are weighing it against OpenShorts: the open source edition is free when you run it yourself (MIT, Docker, your own keys, no watermark, no cap), and OpenShorts Cloud hosts it with the first video clipped whole up to 60 minutes, then 20 minutes a month with a watermark and no credit card, then from $12/month for 100 minutes.
